Brass Band Mailing List
The Brass Band Mailing List is a group of nearly 300 players from around the
world sharing our interest. Why not join? It's free, is a great way to make
contact with them to share ideas and only takes a couple of minutes. You can subscribe
to the mailing list or browse through previous posts by looking at the archive.
When subscribing you will be sent a message containing instructions to confirm
that you are who you say you are, then voila! you're on the list.
When you sign up you will be sent a document that covers some of the wisdom
and folk-lore that helps you get the best out of the Internet and your
membership of the group.
New subscriptions are not being taken e-mail addresses from Bigfoot,
Hotmail, Cable
and Wireless, IC24, Virgin
Net and
AOL customers, because emails sent to their
servers have been known to bounce in the past.
Bigfoot: Bigfoot often bounces mail because they incorrectly block
messages from Demon customers, such as the host of the brass band mailing list,
because of a problem in the ORBL database that
they use. I don't know why they block the list, but I suspect that it may have
to do with their attempt at stopping spam mail, though they seem to have
targeted legitimate mailing lists such as the brass band mailing list. I have
contacted them but they haven't bothered to reply. If you want to use Bigfoot to
join the brass band mailing list, you will need to contact them to correct their
database.
Hotmail: Hotmail often bounces mail from the brass band mailing list.
I don't know why, the error message is "554 transaction failed" or
Original-Recipient:
Final-Recipient: rfc822;XXXXXX@hotmail.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0
I suspect that it may be false positives from their attempt at stopping spam mail.
Cwcom (Cable and Wireless): Cwcom/mcmail does not correctly handle
error messages known as bounces. When they send a bounce the error message comes
from a different address. They claim it is for "security reasons". I
can only suggest that you find a different ISP or pressure them into honouring
Internet standards.
Virginnet: Virginnet suffers from the same incorrect bounce problem as
Cable and Wireless except that all e-mails to postmaster@virginnet.co.uk bounce,
which means that debugging problems is impossible. I can only suggest that you
find a different ISP or pressure them into honouring Internet standards.
IC24: IC24 also suffers from the same incorrect bounce problem,
messages to postmaster@ic24.net are answered and, unlike C&W, correct and
helpful dialogue can ensue. However, I suggest that you find a different ISP or
pressure them into fixing their bounce messages.
AOL: AOL bounces brass band mailing list items which seem to create
false positives in their anti-spam system. For further
information visit
here. You are advised to seek an alternative email address or ISP.
If you've moved to a new area and are looking for a band to join there is a
list of situations vacant and one of situations
wanted. As well as existing as a web page, the list is also posted monthly
to the Internet newsgroups, and different mailing lists that have brass
interests.
If you have a web site, please help to publicise our group by putting this
HTML on it somewhere. Contact me about adding your web page to our group, and
the contents in it to our searchable brass band database.

If your band does not have a web site then contact me about how NJH
Music can arrange that for you.
The list is maintained for free, I do not make any money from
it, however a lot of people interested in brass bands pass through this site, so
if you're interested in sponsoring the site, or the mailing list drop me a line.
