Re: pure brassband list (fwd)

Concerning the recent posts regarding keeping this List to English-style
brass banding, I must say that in some senses I agree. I wouldn't want this
to end up a place to discuss, for example, how to fix saxophones, or which
violin is best, etc.

On the other hand, I find nothing wrong with talking about military bands
(although I won't be doing much of that, because it's outside my knowledge
base) or similiar type bands. As librarian for a Salvation Army brass band,
I know that there are brass bands that have some woodwind instruments. To
ignore them is to ignore a part of banding.

My point is simply that this is a place for brass band players to learn from
other people. A contact point, if you will. If you know that a particular
person has said something that you want to discuss and it's not a
particularly engaging or relevant point, just e-mail the person directly.
(I received 65 pieces of e-mail today in a 24-hour period, 59 of which were
related to this group. Can we keep the posts above "Me, too!"?)

I don't think there should be hard and fast rules. Obviously we should be
talking about brass bands, the music, the contests, the personalities, etc.
If saxophones come up from time to time, so be it. What's the harm? Just
so long as the focus of this List remains the continued growth of interest
in the brass band movement.

That's why we're all here, isn't it?

P.S. Sorry to "pick-on" the saxophone, but I thought he felt kind of
mistreated from the original letter and his response!
