There are many books on orchestration and arranging for orchestras and the like, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a resource for arranging for the Brass Band? In the meantime, if someone could post a complete list of instrumentation with the written and sounded notes for each instrument that would be helpful. Also, which clef each player reads. Maybe this is something which could be kept on an archive site after it is compiled. I've not given an intro of myself, so I should get that taken care of as well. My name is David A. Roth and I'm a composer and trumpet player living in the US. I'm based in Westerville, Ohio, which is a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, which has three active brass bands. I've composed music for film, some of those films have been screened in the UK at a movie house here and there (i.e. England: "The Corn Exchange") and at film festivals. A feature I scored won a Silver award at the 1993 WorldFest Houston International Film Fesitval and its ending title music ("River of Tears") has received airplay in several countries which features a trumpet solo performed by me. I studied music at Indiana University School of Music with Bill Adam (world renowned trumpet guru) and Louis Davidson (former 1st trumpet of The Cleveland Orchestra for 23 years.) Being a trumpet player, I am interested in composing more works for brass ensembles. The brass ensembles (i.e. brass bands) have gotten more popular and I'd like to learn as much as I can about them. So I am looking for comments about those who actually play the instrument in a brass band and how they compare to their cousins. I'd like to thank Nigel for creating this mailing list, as I think it is an excellent idea! Best regards, David A. Roth david@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
