With the success of banding overseas, in particular in Holland, comes
many Dutch arrangements, for example of 'One Moment in Time', and 'Dances
with Wolves' which have both become standard pieces in the repetoir of
bands around the 2nd/1st section ability. Many of these continental parts
are marked, for example, "Solo Cornet/1st Bugle Bb", so I've always assumed
that the continental 'bugle' is not like a British bugle.

The origin of the cornet is a keyed bugle, not a trumpet, so that may
answer your question, though others may come up with a different history.
Many of the brass bands of the mid 18th century used key bugles - often of
French origin - so I guess that the word has stuck in continental use, whereas
we now use the word cornet.

Given the large difference in bore between a baritone and a euphonium I
would spend a little time making up your mind. The baritone's bore is
similar to that of a bass trombone, whereas the euphonium's bore is much
bigger, which is why it's often called a tenor tuba in British orchestral
writing - not to be confused with a tenor tuba in continental orchestral
writing - the latter being the tenor Wagner tuba. Notice the corrolation
with bugles!
