Last night ( 25 / 10 / 95 ) I attended a concert at the Royal
Northern College of music, which was fantastic. The concert was to
celebrate the 50th birthday of Edward Gregson and the 100th birthday
of Denis Wright ( if he had still been alive ). The programme
started with a Festival Fanfare, by Edward Gregson, and conducted by
him also. This was not for Brass Band, but a brass group which
consisted of Trumpets, French Horns, Trombones and a Tuba. The next
piece, however, was for Brass Band - Tam o'Shanter's Ride ( which
happens to be one of my personal favourites. The R.N.C.M brass band
played superbly ! ( some of may remember the this was set for the
1st Section in the C.I.S.W.O contest in 1993 ) Andrew Eastwood
conducted. The next item was Edward Gregson's Sonata for 4 trombones.
This was played by 4 very young, and up-comming players ( Rosalyn
Davies, Denis Kane, John Barber and Simon Chappell ). The next item
was Denis Wright's Concerto for Cornet played by the fantastic Roger
Webster, accompanied by the R.N.C.M brass band. Roger played
superbly. After the interval, Edward Gregson returned to conduct
another fanfare , which was Fanfare for the North. This again was for
the brass group described earlier. The next piece was Essay for Brass
Band, by Edward Gragson, conducted by Andrew Eastwood. Again, the
band were brilliant, with some outstanding soloists. The penultimate
piece was Three Dance Episodes for Brass, by Edward Gregson. This was
arranged for a small brass group. The last piece of the evening was
Dances and Aria's, by Edward Gragson and also conducted by himself.
This was a real finale to the evening. I haven't heard such good,
musical, sensetive and technial brilliance in a long time. The piece
was simply magnificent. The band played " an absolute blinder " ( to
use a quote from home )
All in all it was an excellent night with some excellent music.
Looking round the band, there were some familiar faces, such as Neil
Hewson ( Cornet for Britainnia Building Society ), David Altman (
Horn for Black Dyke ), Claire Allen who competed in the young
musicain of the year, last year and is to compete this year, and also
the Solo horn player for the Wingates Band. The young lady on Soprano
( Kristen Jones ) played superbly, and is a played to watch out for
in the future, also the flugel horn player ( Jayne Bowen ), who has a
superb sound. Looking round the udience there was also some familiar
faces, such as Nick Hudson ( Principal Trombone, Britannia Building
Soceity ), and Roy Newsome ( who needs no introduction ! )
