Dutch Championship (fwd)

This message was bounced because the mail address of the sender is not that
of any subscribed member. However it seems interesting so I've forwarded it
to you all anyway. BTW Journey is spelt with a 'J' not a 'Y',

Merry Christmas,

>
> Hello all!
>
> A bit late to report about the National Brassband Championships of Holland, but
> my harddisk crashed just after the weekend of last 9 December.
> This event was for the first time held in the concerthall "De Doelen" in
> Rotterdam. This is the accomodation where also the European Championships of
> 1991 took place. This hall has very good acoustics and space for such an event.
> 33 bands competed in sections: 4, 3, 2, 1 and championship-section. As usual
> most of the bands are from "Friesland", a province in the very North of
> Holland. The main reason for this can be explained, the population in this area
> is not as densely as in the rest of Holland (many small villages). Holland is
> still the country of Fanfare- and Windbands and so in the early sixties it was
> just in that area, that it became very difficult to attract the musicians
> needed for these types of bands (Fanfare-bands need at least 40 players, wind
> bands 50). Many fanfare and windbands there converted to the brassband-medium.
> In the history of 15 years Dutch BB Champs it is not strange to see that almost
> all the titels went to bands from Friesland or Groningen (also a northern
> area). Except in 1990 the winners of section 3 BB Harp en Luit Vuren and in
> 1991 and 1993 brassband Limburg in the championship section were the only
> "foreign" bands which won the titels.
>
> I played with Brassband Schoonhoven, which is a band from Schoonhoven, a
> village near Rotterdam, in section 2. The test-piece was Partita for Band of
> Philip Wilby. In the preparation we were not so lucky because our soprano
> player suffered of a broken muscle in her diaphragm just a few weeks before
> this event. Fortunately Tracey Redfern, soprano of Britannia Building Society,
> was able to step in. Without a rehearsel with our band she played very well as
> did the whole band on 9 december. So we won out of six bands and this was a
> surprise for many people in the audience (the only "foreign" band in this
> section!). In the championship section there was another surprise (not as big
> as in the second section, but..), Brassband de Bazuin Oenkerk won the title. In
> my opinion the gave a beautiful performance of the testpiece Yourney into
> Freedom of Eric Ball. There was much atmosphere and the playing was in the
> right style of the music. However some things were somewhat "overdone" and
> there were some slips. Also Soli Deo Gloria gave a very solid performance
> without accidents and good dynamics, but the sound and ensemble-playing of this
> band is less than De Bazuin's. I did not like the interpretation of the
> conductor of the Waldsang, Rieks van de Velde. As usual this conductor tries to
> do it in a "different" way which I mostly do not like, also this time.
> Allthough the playing of this band was of a very high level. Limburg, the band
> which impressed the audience the last few years, were disappointing. From the
> beginning till the end their performance was (I am sorry in saying this)
> boring. The band has a new conductor in Leon van Dijck, but the departure of
> Maurice Hamers is certainly a loss for the band.
>
> The day closed with a galaconcert. In the first half Britannia Building Society
> conducted by Howard Snell was in splendid form in items:
> Overture 'Le Corsair' of Berlioz, Harmony Music of Philip Sparke, The Eternal
> Quest of Ray-Steadman Allen (trombonesolo), etc. The second half there was a
> premiere of a new piece by Jan van der Roost (Belgium composer), he wrote an
> oratorio for Choir, Organ, vocal soloists and brassband. I did not hear the
> piece, because I was having a party with people of the band. But I spoke with
> people who enjoyed this piece played by brassband Soli Deo Gloria and others.
>
