The British Bandsman issue no. 4866 from saturday 20 januari
1996 says :

Blach Dyke Mills Band will not defend its title in the 1996
Boosey & Hawkes European Brass Band Championships in Bergen
in May.
It is the first time in the 19-jear history of the European
Championships a band has opted not to do so.
Black Dyke claim they have taken The unprecedented decision
on purely financial grounds.
Asked wether the decision had anything to do with the
uncertainty expressed by Black Dykes' conductor James
Watson, about wether he would continue brass band contest
conducting following a fracas with BNFL player Peter
Younghusband after Dykes' Finals win last october, Beryl
commented : The decision was purely financial. The huge
costs involved was not justified.
