On Sunday, the 1st concert go underway for the B.B.C Festival of Brass. Williams Fairey took the stage, and started with Peter Graham's Preludium. This was excellent. It's quite an opener which is very lively. Next followed Williams Walton's Richard III, arranged by Edward Watson. After this was the B.B C Commission, Prague by Judith Bingham. She spoke about the piece before hand saying that it represented Turmoil with human beings, and lastly was Vistas by Martin Ellery. This is going to be a big hit within the brass band movement. I had all the elements of an excellent test piece and also is an excellent piece of music which is pleasent to listen to. The band ended with an encore of Amazing Grace by Williams Himes. At 7.30 pm, Grimethorpe took the stage under the baton of Major Peter Parks. They started with the Arnold Butterworh piece, Solent Forts which was quite different ( thouse of you who have played such pieces as Odin and Moariana will no what I mean ). Then followed Unholy sonnets by Philip Wilby. This featured Martin Hindmarsh ( tenor ) with the band. Philip has yet again created another excellent piece, with a fantastic last movement. Then followed a good old favourite - Contest Music by Wilfred Heaton. Grimethorpe played this brilliantly - they have quite a fantastic sound !. The finsined by kenneth Downie's Purcell Variations - which again was superb. As an encore they played Goff Richards arrangement of Lets face the music and dance, which brought the concert to a close. If these concerts are anything to go by, then the following 6 will by brilliant.
