Regarding material, I'm tempted to say, almost anything by Stuart Johnson
:-). Specifically, "Preliminary Band Book", which leads on, I think, to
"Progressive Band Book" and "Further Progressive Steps". I imagine very
many list subscribers must have cut their musical teeth on these. I think
what I have always liked about it is that it tries very hard not to be what I
would call "toy" music. Incidentally, Elland Silver Juniors (some of whom
looked about 5 :-)) played some of this stuff - admirably - at a recent
NYBB/JSVB concert in Halifax.
There's also the Hinrichsen "First Band Book".
We do deal with chidren as young as 7 at Wantage, but I'm not the
person who deals with them. If you have any specific queries, you're
welcome to email them to me, and I'll see if I can get a useful reply for
you.
