A friend of mine played with Faireys around the time of the change 
over  and I remember
him telling me that they made an effort to be one of the last top
bands to change over. As a consequence they were very successful
because, he said, their performances sounded brighter than low pitch
bands and, unless the adjudicator was particularly good, he wouldn't
be able to tell that it was because the band was playing sharp.
