>From Robert Lynch, E flat bass, Evening Post Onslow Band, Wellington NZ.
Greetings everyone!
There has been much posted about the Australian Championships anyway, but some
pieces of information have not been passed on...
Parade of Bands (Street March) (/150)
1. Trust Bank Canterbury Woolston, NZ 134.5
2. Fosters Auckland Brass, NZ 134
3. Evening Post Onslow, NZ 131.6
4. TVNZ Waitakere Brass, NZ 131.5
5. Hawthorn City, VIC 129.3
Apparently, New Zealand bands have always done very well in the Marching
competition, but this year they walked away with all the main contest places
too.
The Solo winners (not a complete list) were...
Junior Bb cornet Robert Kavanagh, Salisbury City, SA
Open Bb cornet Trevor Bremner, Fosters Auckland Brass, NZ
Junior Eupho Nikki Kersch, St Mary's Band Club, NSW
Junior Tenor Horn Nicole Tweddle, Warragul Municipal, VIC
Junior Bass Trom Grant Hughson, Willoughby City, NSW
Junior Tenor Trom Aidan Parkinson, Toronto & District, NSW
Open Euphonium Riki McDonnell, TVNZ Waitakere Brass, NZ
Junior Flugel Horn Nigel Newman, Anondale Advent Brass, NSW
Junior Baritone Matthew Van Emmerik, Greater Bendigo, VIC
Junior Soprano Colin Clark, Kensington & Norwood, SA
Open Tenor Horn Ken Bradley, St Mary's Band Club, NSW
Junior Eb Bass Gary McGibbon, Willoughby City, NSW
Junior Bb Bass Edward Andrews, Willoughby City, NSW
Open Soprano Colin Clark, Kensington & Norwood, SA
Open Flugel Horn Julie Watts, Fosters Auckland Brass, NZ
Open Tenor Trom David Bremner, Evening Post Onslow, NZ
Open Bass Trom Mike Forsyth, St Mary's Band Club, NSW
OPEN CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS: Trevor Bremner, Fosters Auckland Brass, NZ.
Personally, I'd like to congratulate all the team involved in organising the
weekend. Just one complaint: please get a hall with better acoustics! The
reception of the Aussie bands to the Kiwis was friendly and welcoming, and it
was a pleasure to see the solo contests so well supported. Particular mention
must go to the Brisbane Excelsior Band, who shared a hotel with us (Evening Post
Onslow) and Foster's Auckland Brass. As Phil McCann (chief adjudicator) and
Philip Sparke (NZ contest last year) said: the atmosphere at these contests is
special, rivalry is healthy and positive. There is much that the British band
scene could learn from coming over here.
One question to all those present at Philip McCann's concert: did anyone
enjoy it? The feedback I've had was not exactly over-complimentary...
Well done Sydney, I really enjoyed my time there.
Robert Lynch, Evening Post Onslow.
