I play on a Bach 50BG with a gold bell, open wrap tuning slides, interchangeable
lead pipes and an in-line double valve in Gb-D. I play on a Bach 1 1/2 G
mouthpiece. I find this set up quite good on the whole, but it does have its
limitations. Firstly, if you're playing with a LOUD band, then sometimes it's
difficult to project. Basic remedy is head back, bell up and let 'em have it,
but sometimes a quick change to a 1G mouthpiece is a good idea (this applies to
pedal notes too - Philip Wilby in particular). I also find that in some of the
more modern test pieces, there are usually some tricky glissando passages (eg
Sounds by John Golland, the recent area test piece) and I sometimes find
glissandos that are impossible using my tuning , but would be possible on, say,
a Sovereign, with in line valve in G-Eb. It would be even harder to project on
a Sovereign though. My recommendations are Bachs or Holtons. Possibly
Sovereign or Edwards, but I find these generally disappointing in the bras band
environment.
Best wishes,
