Military musicians are full time professionals. They are in the military
becuase they can
perform at a professional level. It is generally agreed that music teachers are
not "professioanals" but really they earn their living as musicians 100%.
College bands use players in performance programs that are essentially unpaid
professionals. Also a college instructor is really professional.

	If every player who gets paid for playing outside their band
activities was eliminated from competition the championship section would
be probably non existant. I think the proper designation
is to only exclude those whose full time emplyoyment is music with teaching
excepted. This would
exclude military musicians who should be playing at the gala not at the
competition.
There could be a professional category for bands like the River City and
Pershings own.
