The Grand Shield took place on Saturday at Bolton and the results follow. There were a lot of GOOD performances, and a lot of bands would have been disapointed. The adjudicators spent some time in the box after the contest had finished, no doubt delibarating over who to put where ( they were Roy Newsome and John Berryman ). At first, they declined to give out any remarks on the satge, as they said their remarks were detailed enough individual comments madeon the remark sheets, but in the end Roy Newsome got up and spoke. As I listen to the bans, the main problem which let a lot of very good bands down, were the cadenza's especially the Horn. I can only think of 2 or three bands that managed to play the cadenzas without any mistakes ! The Results are : Test Piece - Variations on a ninth ( Gilbert Vinter ) 1st - Wingates ( Nick Childs ) - 194 pts 2nd - Polypipe ( Rossington) ( Brian Hurdly ) - 193 pts 3rd - Rhodian Brass ( Graham O'Connor ) - 192 pts 4th - British Fuels ( Parc & Dare ) ( Jeremy Wise ) - 191 pts 5th - B.T.M ( Steve Sykes ) - 190 pts 6th - Staylebridge ( John Hudson ) - 189 pts It was a well deserved win by WIngates, as I thought there performance had something which the other performances didn't have. Their's was exciting to listen to, and the others seemed a bit ' dull ' when compared. The top two bands get to compete at the Open in September, which are Wingates and Polypipe.
