Hi All! On 17 and 18 May the annual Dutch Open Brassband Festival was held in Utrecht in the large "Jaarbeurs Congrescentrum". This is a contest where also foreign bands are welcome. On Friday 6 bands took part in the "Basic" section (section 4 and 3) and 6 bands in the "Middle" section (section 2 and 1). On Saturday 6 bands competed in the "Championship" section. Each band has to play half an hour and the programme must exist of an own choice test-piece, a solo work and the testpiece. The test-pieces were: Basic section: Backdraft Middle " " : Far and Away Championship : Slaughter on Tenth Avenue A few middle section bands complained about the difficulty of the testpiece and so the organisation decided just two weeks before the contest that bands were also allowed to play the short version. In my opinion this decision was very wrong, there were bands which played the full version (three bands) and the rest played the short version. The results are: Basic Section: 1. Randstad Brass Adventure - Den Haag, The Netherlands (91 points) 2. Juliana - Kollummerzwaag, The Netherlands (90 points) 3. Kunst en Vriendschap - Meeuwen, The Netherlands (88 points) Middle Section: 1. David, Zwolle - The Netherlands (88 points) 2. Brassband Schoonhoven - The Netherlands (87 points) 3. Pro Rege, Heerenveen - The Netherlands (86 points) (Note: the champion band played the short version of the testpiece) Championship Section: 1. Brassband Willebroek, Belgium (95 points) 2. Sanderfjord Brass Symposium, Norway (93 points) 3. Brassband Rijnmond, Netherlands (92 points) 4. Provinciale Brassband Groningen, The Netherlands (91 points) 5. Brassband Union, Belgium (89 points) 6. Excelsior Veenwoudsterwal, Netherlands (85 points) In the Basic and the Middle Section there were totally unexpected winners. The public opinion was that Juliana and Schoonhoven should have win. In the Championship Section it was clear that Willebroek deserved to win. There were a few English musicians in their line up as for example Roger Webster on cornet. The solo euphonium of Willebroek won also the prize for the best soloist: Stephen Pillaert. He was outstanding in his performance of "Carnival Coktail" and he is in my opinion at least equally as good as players like Steven Mead and the Childs brothers. The Progamme of Willebroek: Firework - Jan van der Roost There is a green hill far away - arr. Newsome Slaughter on Tenth Avenue - arr. ?? (NOT the well known arrangement of Sandy Smith) Carnival Coktail - arr. Sykes Spectrum - Vinter You'll never walk alone - arr. Snell Lightwalk - Gott Sanderfjord played: Dances and Arias - Edward Gregson; Rijnmond: Paganini Variations - Wilby; Groningen: Circius - Aagaard Nilssen; Buizingen: Salamander - McCabe; Excelsior: The Firebird - Stravinsky. -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to listserv@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
