 I came across a Web page which goes some way to explaining the Whit Friday 
 tradition.  It's not one of the best web pages you'll find but it has some 
 interesting information about the various contests and prizes.  There are 
 also a few photos.

 No doubt there will be many other replies to your question from the 
 hundreds (maybe thousands?) of bands-persons who participate in these events
