Re: UK Bands in the the Park (June 1996): Alphabetically A to T

I am very glad that bands are slowly coming back to the traditional 'playing
in the park' routines, and I'm delighted that Canberry Gardens in Kingston
Upon Thames is rebuilding its bandstand.

There was always one there until, September 3rd 1939, when Epsom & Ewell
appeared there. It was also the day that war was declared, and as the band
left on that afternoon, so the authority came to took the bandstand down,
to melt down the iron.

Bands first re-appeared in the early 1980's, playing on a tarmac area in
front of the tennis courts. Kingston Youth Concert Band play there
regularly, and as they go on a number of exchange tours, bands from Sweden,
Canada and Denmark have all graced the gardens. Every year since 1981
there has been a performance every Sunday from April to September, and
many SCABA bands (especially Staines, Epsom & Ewell, Friary Guildford
and Aldershot) are regulars. Now the local authority have decided it is
time to re-build the bandstand, in the Victorian style but large enough to
accomodate the modern bands.

I find it a great relief that there are still some people appreciating the
finer points of our history.
