HI! I recommend that you and your band consider joining NABBA, the North American Brass Band Association. By joining, you and your band will find out about what the other bands in North America are doing, who they are, where they are, etc. By joining, your band can enter and compete in the annual championships. Now, before you say "I don't want to compete, I just want to have fun making good music", or something to that effect, let me assure you that the competition is all in good comradeship, and has the very beneficial effect of letting you hear what other bands sound like, you can learn how to make yours improve tremendously! For example, the Illinois Brass Band entered the NABBA championships for the first time in 1993, after almost two years of existance. We entered in the second level and came in last place (although we were told that we had the best trumpet section in all of NABBA). We learned from that and made changes to our tone quality and our interpretation of the music, so the next year, we came in First place in the second level! We learned alot! Since then, we have played numerous concerts and festivals where we, again, had the opportunity to listen to other bands and talk to their players, so that this year we came in first place in the top level! How'd you like your band to do that? I realize that you wanted a list of the brass bands in this country, but NABBA, of course, has just such a list (at least the member bands). To join, send your name, address, phone, instrument played, band name, e-mail, and membership category along with the appropriate amount, for a year's membership. categories: individual $25 retiree $15 student $10 band $60 corporate $100 patron $500 leadership $1000 make checks payable to North American Brass Band Association, and send check and above info to : Bert L. Wiley NABBA Membership Chairman P.O. Box 2438 Cullowhee, NC 28723 With your membership, you get a year's subscription to The Brass Band Bridge, a magazine, devoted to brass banding in North America (it comes out every couple of months or so...), and they publish a list of the member bands every year or so. I think you will find it worth every penny! (IMHO) Guy Clark prinicpal cornet, Illinois Brass Band ---------- From: Mark D.
