The finals of the Brass Band category of the NFMFY will take place all day in the Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, London on Thursday 11 July. The category consists of 3 sections: school bands, music centre bands, and an open section. Our band, Sandwell Youth Band, will be talking part in the open section, playing Music of Thanksgiving by Kenneth Downie. The judges (Frank Renton and others usually) award two prizes in each section: Highly Commended, and Outstanding Performance. The recipients of the Outstanding Peformance prize are invited to take part in the NFMFY prom in November at the Royal Albert Hall. Also taking part, in the chamber group section, is the Sandwell Youth Tuba Ensemble. This group of about 15 players is one of only 3 groups of this size in the country. Directed by one of Sandwell's peripatetic music teachers, Stuart Birnie, also a member of the British Tuba Quartet, they will be playing Robin Hood Fanfare, a movement from Bulla's Celestial Suite, a movement from Frackenpohl's Pop Suite, and an arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Trepak. Tickets valid for the day cost 4 pounds and are available on the door.
