The Bloomington (Indiana) Community Band had in those days one tuba (me) and one barfonium (undifferentiated baritone/euphonium). We were doing the Holst Suite for band (I think no. 1 -- the one that begins with a chaconne in Eb, starting with an announcement of the theme by soli tubas and barfoniums. By prearrangement, the euphonium player and I played the entire passage in E natural instead of Eb. Apparently no-one in the band had absolute pitch, or else they thought that our instruments were badly mistuned. So no-one seemed to notice until the rest of the band entered -- in the correct key! The conductor was nonplussed for a moment, then went back to the beginning with the explanation that she must have given us a wrong tempo. Fair enough -- we gave her a bad time, she gave us a wrong tempo. This was during rehearsal, of course. Play well!
