Discussions about contest rules is a never-ending story.
In Denmark it=B4s allowed with proffessionals in our bands, but they =
have to be permanent members. But
it=B4s not very much used, - our bands are generally not that good .
When you are studying music it=B4s OK for a student - coming from the =
amateurworld - to continue
playing in an amateurband. But when you have finished it=B4s without =
prestige, except conducting.

But as I see it don=B4t hesitate to vote YES for allowing proffesionals. =

The other way round, the association of proffessional musicians in =
Denmark years ago was very
agressive to the amateurbands and did not allow there members to play in =
these bands. Bands was
competing with the professional ones and took there jobs. About 30 years =
ago an agreement was signed, telling what was legal to do for
the amateurs, and allowing professionals to play "con amore"; but when =
extra rehearsals is coming up
the prof. must be payed. I don=B4t think this have ever been done. But =
time has changed. I have myself
negotiated ( not yet signed ) a new version of the agreement, that =
describes more the community of
proffessionals an the amateurs, than the differenties.

Folks,

I`ve just come from a heated meeting of the South-East Region of the =
Irish
Association of Brass and Military Bands. Currently, no professionals
(members of army or police bands, orchestras etc., or anyone who earns =
more
than 2/3 of their living from music. Conductors are exempt.)are allowed =
to
play in Irish contests. Over the years, there have been so many =
ammendments
and minor alterations to the rule, that "disagreements!" are becoming
common. So our national executive are trying to find a solution. All =
bands
have been asked to discuss the problem, and offer solutions, which will =
be
voted on at the AGM in Jan/Feb `97.
What solutions have Associations etc. come up with in other countries, =
or do
any list members have any strong views, one way or the other?
I think the Irish movement has crippled itself not allowing =
professionals.
We can learn so much from these people, but unregulated, abuses of the =
rules
could cause serious rifts within the Association.
I really would appreciate any comments on this matter.
