Hawthorn band (Melbourne Australia) won the Championship section of the NABBA contest in 1994 and I can assure you that every player was a true amatuer. "Professional" just means you make your living at it. It doesn't necessarily mean your'e better than the amatuers. Professionals often make worse all-round bandsmen because of their lack of ability to commit 100% and develop ensemble skills with that group. Top band music is also completely beyond most players to sight-read, professional or not. Bands in Australia, who have never had a ban on the use of professional players, learned these lessons years ago and by and large do not use professionals. Many questioned the "special exemption" that the Dominion BB got to compete. They won the Honors crown handily, and probably could have placed Top 3 in Championship section (they were that good). Was it really fair to being together all those military musicians from a large area to compete against a group of amatuers?
