The Lowry Sketchbook

Philip Wilby's 'The Lowry Sketchbook' was written in 1992 for Britannia Building
Society Band. It has three movements, 1. City Scape, 2. Family Portraits, 3.
Peel Park (The Bandstand). The first movement is typical Wilby, lots of rushing
semiquavers for the cornets, on top of broad blocks of harmony from bass
instruments pedalling (bass trom. included!) and shock chords from the lower end
of the band. There is an important part for vibraphone which ends the movement.
The second movement is slow and simple, quite beautiful. The third movement
starts with fanfares throughout the band (I think this is meant to signify the
town band announcing that they're about to play). Then the basses launch into a
tune taken from Bach (I think). They're joined by the whole band eventually,
which leads to an exciting, abrupt climax. Not as good as the three Open test
pieces he wrote (Paganini, Masquerade, Revelation - he wrote them in 91, 93,
95...hopefully we'll get another next year!!) but it will certainly be a test
for the Championship section next year.

The CD I heard it on was 'Sacred Symphonies - featuring the music of Philip
Wilby'. It has some wind band music on it, including the wind band version of
'Dragons Arise', called here 'Dawn Flight'. Brass band pieces, played by Black
Dyke, are The Lowry Sketchbook, Concert Galop, Purcell: Fantasia: Three Parts on
a Ground, Revelation and Xylophone solo - Toccata Brillante. It's published by
Doyen, and the number is DOY CD 053.

Best wishes,
