It really depends on what the point of going to a "contest" is. If the true objective of going to a contest is getting the top score and winning then I suppose it wasn't fair. If the reason for going to a contest is to become a better musician through performing for a demanding audience and learning from those better than you (musically, technically, or in terms of stage presence) then it was probably a good thing that the pros were there. My personal view is that music is the journey - enjoy it, revel in it on its own terms and let the chips fall where they may.
