You can't escape the fact that in the lower register, the bass trombone does sound 'amusing'. I was playing Prelude and Allegro by Eugene Bozza at a recital a few months ago. This piece was written for the Paris Conservatoire, so it's hardly 'throwaway' stuff. However, as soon as I hit the pedal notes in the cadenza, I saw one lady on the front row start shaking with mirth (well, either that or I was making her chair vibrate!). Either way, it was quite off putting!
