On another note, I have heard very little out of Irish bands

Not to surprising, neither have I! This is mainly because Irish bands are
not as good as our British neighbours. And (strangely enough) part of the
problem is the lack of the professional element in the movement here, among
other things.
A lot of professionals are involved in band conducting and tutoring,
they just don't play in the band themselves. The pro brass scene in
Dublin is small - there aren't that many players. In the rest of
Ireland it's virtually non-existent.

 Recently, Irelands only Brass Band
music publisher has gone on line at

Fergus O'Carroll is a friend, so anything that follows is biased :-)
He does have some great arrangements, including some taken from the
repertoire of the R.T.E. Concert Orchestra. If you are interested in
Irish music check out Cead Mille Failte arr Johnny Tate, I think it's
brilliant. (10% Fergus?)
