Hi everybody,

Well, my name is Joan and I have been a list member for a couple of weeks
now and I thought it was time to introduce myself.

I come from Denmark and play the solo cornet in a local brassband in Aalborg
in the north of Denmark. Unfortunately the major part of the members of the
band are not interested in participating in contests. I myself find it
rather positive to contest and hope to be able to talk them into it
sometime. Perhaps the reason is that the average age of the band is quite
high and only a few years ago the standard of the band got to a level where
it was able to compete.

The reason why the standard of my band has gone up quite a bit is that we
had a new (this was before I signed up with the band) conducter, who used to
play with the Grenadier Guards in London as a solo cornet player - educated
at the Royal Military School of Music. At the time he had met a Danish girl
and emigrated to Denmark, which was our luck.

My greatest experiences from the brass band world are my first concert with
a championship section band - Grimethorpe Colliery - back in 1993 after
having spent 6 months in England playing music - among other things. These 6
months followed a week with a Danish youth band visiting another youth band
in Basingstoke, which was a wonderful experience - seeing these kids from 8
to 16 years of age "conquering" England. They had a great time. The third
and latest experience, which I will mention here was the concerts/week-end
with the Black Dyke Mills in Copenhagen just over a month ago. It was simply
wonderful!!

To any musicians from Black Dyke Mills: I would like to thank you for a
couple of wonderful days and two beautiful concerts. My best regards to
everyone in the band.

In my band we are planning to go to England during May 1997 to visit another
band in Portsmouth. We haven't set the exact dates yet, but if any of you
should happen to know of some great concerts during the month of May in the
Portsmouth area, please let me know.
