Here are the results from the first, third and fourth sections at the recent Pontins Brass Band Championships, Saturday October 26th. FIRST SECTION ************* Test piece: A London Overture by Philip Sparke Adjudicators: Denis Wilby & Colin Hardy BAND CONDUCTOR DRAW POINTS 1 United Co-op Crewe J Sparkes 19 189 2 Glossop Old G Cutt 7 187 3 Ratby Co-op K Steward 17 185 4 Hepworth N C Law 16 184 5 Beaumaris & District G Evans 5 182 6 Berisfords & Cardway plc H Megarrell 3 180 The test piece was just a little too difficult for the standard of the competing bands. Only a handful of the 20 bands got anywhere near playing the piece which made the contest a bit boring. Crewe Co-op were worthy winners with all four soloists playing excellent cadenzas; they were the only band who managed the trebble fortes with reasonable balance and tuning. Many performances were ruined by poor balance, particularly by PAINFULLY LOUD solo horn players (I've never liked Sovereign tenor horns) who ought to know better. THIRD SECTION ************* Test piece: Music from Kantara by Kenneth Downie Adjudicators: Geoffrey Whitham & Dennis Masters BAND CONDUCTOR DRAW POINTS 1 Milnrow D Morris 6 180 2 Marsden Silver A Widdop 12 178 3 Deinoilen R Wyatt 13 177 4 Frickley/South Elmshall L K Price 3 176 5 Hoover Band (Bolton) A Warriner 7 175 6 Eatons Farnworth P Heyes 9 174 7 Normid 2000 D Newton 5 8 Rhyl Silver G Thomas 1 9 Wotton-under Edge R Carr 11 10 Greenfield D Chapman 8 11 Tideswell P W Chapman 2 12 Horbury Victoria D Neil 10 13 Malvern Hills Brass M Caveney 4 FOURTH SECTION ************** Test piece: Stantonbury Festival by Ray Steadman-Allen Adjudicators: David Read & John Berryman 1 Bream Silver B James 180 2 St John's (Mossley) S Corbett 178 3 Stape Silver M Breckon 176 4 Dobcross Youth T Griffiths 174 I was only there for the Saturday and so I haven't got the results for the Second and Championship sections which were competing today (Sunday). I did hear a rumour that Woolley Pritchard's won the Champioship section.
