BBC Radio 2 Showcase: Sheona White (A Review)

On Saturday 9th November at 7pm BBC Radio 2 presented a Showcase concert
featuring Young Musician of the Year Sheona White on Eb tenor horn.

The programme opened with an orchestral work and continued with an air varie
on Beethoven's tune which is known to many as the nursery rhyme "Twinkle
Twinkle Little Star" (the former not featuring Sheona at all). Some more
fine music followed including a melodious piece by John Golland and the
hour-long programme culminated in the premiere performance of a piece
dedicated to Ms. White called simply "Sheona". This last piece is a medley
of songs by Robert Burns and contains snippets of such songs as "Whistle and
I will come tae ye my lad", "The De'ils awa' with the Exciseman", "Ca' the
Yowes", "There was a lad was born in Kyle" to name but a few. The various
melodies interspersed with each other proved to be an effect used to maximum
potential and made listening to pick out familiar melodies quite an art form
(even for someone like myself who grew up around the music and poems of
Robert Burns - Sheona grew up in Maybole in Ayrshire, Scotland (Robert
Burns was born in Alloway, Ayrshire - hence the connection).

Until recently, Sheona White was playing with Yorkshire Building Society
Band but I believe she is now concentrating on a promising and rewarding
solo career, mixed with guest appearances with bands and orchestras plus a
lectureship at Salford University. I'm sure she will do really well.

Thank you for reading this review.
