There used to be a FAQ on music notation software at http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/music/notation-pgms/faq.html but it doesn't seem to be there any more. Don't know whether it moved or totally disappeared. Finale and Encore usually seem to end up on everyone's short list. I use Encore. It's okay - whole lot better than doing it by hand, but you still end up doing a lot of grunt work.
