Re: Musical Committees: Personally I can think of nothing worse than Musical Direction by committee. We are fortunate to have a Musical Director who invites comment from band members and encourages us to write, arrange and conduct. However, such things aside, when the chips are down (e.g. 2 weeks before a contest), it is he alone who extracts either a poor, mediocre or excellent performance from the band. We happen to like his dedication to musical expression and interpretation, but this sometimes draws snide comments from MD's of other, perhaps more technically proficient, bands. So what? We enjoy ourselves and so far our adjudication results just keep getting better. The only Committee we have is an administrative committee which meets monthly, reviews itself annually, and appoints a Musical Director as one of the band officers. The MD then has free reign for that year. IMHO an individual MD should have the freedom to interpret the music and direct performers as they wish, rather than having to tread the insecure path of compromise and negotiation with sometimes fragile egos in a "Musical Direction" committee.
