Hi list, Does this seem a little narrow minded and hypocritical: How can it be said in one sentence > Subject: Re: No Swing in the U.K.? > From: Gregor Spowart <ceegjs1@xxxxxxxxxxxx> > If you want to listen to Mahler, go hear and orchestra. If you want > to listen to Ellington, go hear a big band. and then in another: > test-pieces are the best form of brass band music. Revelation, > Paganini Variations, Essence of Time, all that sort of stuff, Using this example 'Paganini Variations', if I'm not mistaken it is an orchestral transcription and arrangement of familiar Paganini sound bites.??????? > I don't like most of the jazz transcriptions (although L'il Darlin', I do > like...especially the cornet solo, which I had the chance to play > with my school band a few years back....So much fun) If your whole 'opinion' of jazz transcriptions is based upon your own rendition of L'il Darlin' then I would hardly class this as an authority in jazz routes. Again using your example of Ellington. To my knowledge, Ellington's musical creativity spanned from the 1920's to the 70's. I don't think that he played the same pieces and style in the 70's as he did in the 20's, so why should brass bands become 'music- cast' . Are we involved in the evolution of brass band music, or is this to far fetched to contemplate. Maybe we should stay in the dark ages, a bit like the audiences that that music appeals to. (sweeping statement?) I would be interested to hear your opinions on test pieces like New Buckingham Suite and its great description in Nigel Wears list-mail?? How does this rate as a Brass Band, Jazz or Orchestral piece?? Yours in despair Matt Booth -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to listserv@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
