This will likely appeal mostly to North American bandies, but please feel free to reply whoever and wherever you are if you are interested. The Woods Manufacturing Co. Brass Band (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) will not be participating in this year's NABBA (North American Brass Band Association) competition in Redwing, Minnesota, April 18&19 (Fri&Sat). Time, distance, cost, and other irons in the fire are the main reasons. Too bad; the championship test piece is New Jerusalem. Too bad also since I know we could have won, having played Trittico and Simpsons' Energy at last year's competition. However.... some of us do want to participate in the competition and our band master, David Druce, sensing that other bands/players in Canada or the US might be in a similar situation, suggested an alternative. The idea is to form a band of interested players and enter as a participant. However, since we would not meet the requirements of a competing band, we would not be able to win a prize; we could only get a mark. Personally, I'd like to give it a shot. I've wanted to play NJ since I first heard it (most other Wilby stuff too, for that matter) and would relish a chance to give it a go. Besides, me and my Eb tuba love contesting. Even without a prize for the effort, we would know we had done better than anyone else, and so would the others! To do this as an instantly organized band would require an aggressive approach. It is definitely not for the faint of heart, nor for naysayers and whiners. It is do-able, with the right talent and with David driving the rehearsals. This is what would be involved: * David Druce as conductor * two 12-hr. days of rehearsal on Apr. 17 and 18 * compete in challenge section on Apr. 19 * Woods would supply the music parts to interested participants * participants chosen by audition: a tape of you playing; a phone call; live audition if you're in/near Ottawa; maybe even just your say-so, but you better be up to the task! * you practice on your own or in small groups with a recording until we can get together * you must be a NABBA member when we play (Small member fee, $25.00 I think) * Woods will pay the entry fee * transportation and all other costs are yours alone to bear If you are interested and enthusiastic about wanting to do this, contact me via e-mail (hal@xxxxxxxxx). Supply the following info: * your name * instrument(s) and position(s) played * a way of contacting you: e-mail; tel_no., etc. * your location * are you a NABBA member? We'll get back to all respondants in about a week to let you know how much interest there is and decide then, or soon after, if we have enough interested people to proceed with detailed planning. ...Hal -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to listserv@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
