Perhaps this topic has been beat to death around the brass band world, but
since I haven't seen any discussion of it on the list I'd like to start
one on this topic; the idea of creating a Professional division for the
major contests (i.e. NABBA Championships, British and European Opens, et.al).

This topic came up at the last NABBA Contest Board meeting due to the
participation of the Dominion Brass Band in the last NABBA Championships.
The idea proposed was that another section for professional bands like
Pershing's Own and others (perhaps the Dominion band itself) to compete in
so they would have their own section and they would not be able to
complain about not competing. Also, it could help prevent bands from
'sliding in' to amature sections from things like special exemptions.

This Professional section would be open to all contesting bands, not just
the professional ones. However, the bands defined as 'Professional' bands
would only be able to compete in this section. For example, Pershing's Own
U.S. Army Brass Band would only be able to compete in the Professional
section, but the Illinois Brass Band could move up to this section if they
felt they were strong enough to move up based upon their last victory at
NABBA '96.
