I think it's a difficult balance, I would imagine that a lot of bandsmen/women would be entertained by just good music, I certainly would. However sometimes I feel that something a little different/novel can swing a contest one way or another. There have been a number of examples of visual effects that have gone down very well e.g. Duet For Two Cats - Martin Winters and Chris Jeans Loves Old Sweet Song - BBS with flugel playing down a bass The Grimethorpe Entertains routine - Lucerne Song etc. All of these examples are from a number of years ago and I don't think have really been bettered, however I must admit I didn't go to spennymoor last year and from reading the Bandsman there was some messing around. All in all I feel that it is very easy to go over the top on things like this, one item from the past I vaguely remember was Yorkshire Imps playing Peanut Vendor with Ray Farr and finishing up with two players weilding huge peanuts above their head dancing and other players chucking bags of peanuts into the audience, possibly a bit OTT but I think they won a prize for the most entertaining piece. P.S. Another type of music creeping into many entertainment programs are swing numbers, probably to the disgust/dismay of Mr Spowart. Cheers Phil. PPS After speaking to my sister it sounds as though Marple had a few problems in Riverdance due to a percusionist with a recently broken wrist, from what I gather the Open champions played well other than this and could have just as easily won the contest. - By the way does anyone out there know where Markfield brass came? ---------- From: Janet Lewis[SMTP:admjl1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 03 February 1997 10:54 To: Brass-band@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Yeovil Contest Text item: Text_1 The result from Yeovil are as follows 1 Cory 2 Besses 3 Marple Best Soloist - Wingates - Euphonium I travelled down to this contest with Marple and on the way back a very interesting (honestly!) debate took place. The question being WHAT IS ENTERTAINMENT????????? My opinion is that the music itself should entertain me and not the visual effects. Has anyone else out there got any comments.
