 The North West Area Brass Bands Association promoted their 50th annual contest
 at Preston's Guild Hall yesterday (Sunday Feb 9th).  The playing in the top 
 section was of a very high standard and most people seemed to agree with the
 results although some were surprised not to see Hepworth in the frame.  Roy 
 Newsome clearly enjoyed the variety of music chosen and he was particularly 
 impressed with Point of Ayr's performance of Paganini Variations which he 
 described as breath-taking.

 The contest was, as usual, very well organised which made for a great day 
 out and (for us at least) a great start to the 1997 contest season.


 CHAMPIONSHIP SECTION - Adjudicated by Roy Newsome

 2. Glossop Old (Trittico) 190pts
 3. British Telecom (English Heritage) 188pts
 The prize for the best Cornet went to the BT band

 1. Ashton Under Lyne 185 pts
 2. Walkden 182 pts
 3. Golborne 180 pts

 THIRD SECTION - Adjudicated by Dennis Wilby
 1. Delph 176 pts
 2. Flookburgh 174 pts
 3. United Norwest Co-op 171 pts

 FOUTH SECTION - Adjudicated by Roy Newsome
 1. Thornton Clevelys
 2. ??
 3. Standish
