The North West Area Brass Bands Association promoted their 50th annual contest at Preston's Guild Hall yesterday (Sunday Feb 9th). The playing in the top section was of a very high standard and most people seemed to agree with the results although some were surprised not to see Hepworth in the frame. Roy Newsome clearly enjoyed the variety of music chosen and he was particularly impressed with Point of Ayr's performance of Paganini Variations which he described as breath-taking. The contest was, as usual, very well organised which made for a great day out and (for us at least) a great start to the 1997 contest season.
