Phil, Thanks for the reply, now I am not an instrument technition, but the compensating tubing on baritones, euphs, tubas etc comes into play when certain combinations of valves are pressed down. it doesn't just come into play with the 4th valve. Having said that, there is some truth in what you say, (ie. that when you put all 3 valves down for a low note the compensation will be the same as when you put all 3 down for an upper note ) but that said, due to harmonics etc. and no doubt a little sensible compromising on the part of instrument manufacturers, this rarely has a major effect. (for example how often do you need all three valves compressed in the higher register ?). Does this make sense ?
