This is also used in the old imperial euphs and basses, particularly 
useful on a BB.  I think what happens is when the 3rd valve is depressed, 
extra tubing conects to the 1st valve, but is only 'open' when 1 is also 
used.  Have a look at your baritone players' horns, to see what I mean, 
the slides look quite different from uncompensated instruments.
