Re[2]: Results from Blackpool

     Hi Tim,

You said that you heard the top five bands. How do you think our
band played? We were extremely pleased with 5th place as the
band has been newly promoted from the first section.

It was also a good day for me as my husband plays solo euph for
Marple!! (no, we are not divorced yet).

I would welcome any feedback from you regarding our performance.

     Regards

     Janet Lewis

I heard the top 5 bands on Sunday and I have to say I though Fairey's were
appalling. It was easily the worst contest performance I have heard the band
give ever. There were so many splits and spare entries in the outer two
movements and even in the slow section there were intonation problems and whole
sections of the band not coming in or moving together. With respect Don, I
think it's easier to spot the dodgy playing in a piece you've rehearsed
yourself
 - you subconsciously listen out for bits you know bands can slip up on.
Likewise, I thought I'd heard an unbeatable performance of Ballet for Band in
the 1st section, and the band I heard came about 9th!! Britannia played very
well indeed and a slightly insecure slow movement was made up for with an
absolutely blistering third movement - easily the best I've heard from the 2
areas I've been to (maybe even the country??) For consistency, the best band
there were BNFL - they showed great control and dexterity throughout all 3
movements - very few intonation problems and some fine ensemble playing in the
2nd movement, and some tight, controlled playing in the outer two movements.
(Put on the cap saying 'ADJUDICATOR' here...) My own result would have been
BNFL first, with Britannia second, and Wingates and Fairey's fighting it out
for
third and fourth. Still, I wasn't in the box yesterday - I payed my 5 like
eveyone else and went home feeling slightly disappointed...and very, very
rough.
:)

All the best,
