Re: some brassband questions from BELGIUM!

There seems to be a lot of healthy brass band activity in Europe. Are
these all "traditiona British" Brass Bands, or are there local variants in
instrumentation?

Slightly off topic:
Ruben Vanveggel asked

No, it's not a silly question. We in the former British colonies have
similar problems with English names. My friend Mr Cholmondely (pronounced
"Chumley") said Brighouse is probably pronounced "Bruce" or "Brouce".

There is a British cricket commentator who tells us about manches in
"So'wAfrica", wherever that is.

At a recent performance an announcer asked if Woodhouse (of "Rural Suite")
was Wood-house or Wode-house. I suggested "Woos" (oo as in foot) and he
accepted that without batting an eyelid.

And I live in Reading Rd, which I have to mispronounce as "Reading" because
there is no "Redding" in the tsreet directory...

I won't bother putting this through the spell checker.
