Regarding Philip Anderson's reply: I would agree that there is a certain
amount of "luck" !! I don't feel contesting should be a lucky dip. A very
well respected adjudicator once said to me "the first thing is the music
must be played correctly, all notes and rhythms and dynamics, then we go
to sound, musicality and interpretation. So this leaves out your theory
that to win you have to be "lucky to get an adjudicator to agree with your
conductor's choice of interpretation". In overseas competition where three
adjudicators are used, I have no problem with musical achievers who are not
necessarily intermittently involved in the brass band scene. But in
Australia as you know we usually have one adjudicator and therefore I feel
that it is important that we don't go off the track i.e. orchestral,
chamber music and wind band styles creeping into what is I consider a music
art form in its own right.
I'm glad we can agree on the march but wouldn't you think the contest
organisers who scrutinise the music (hopefully) would return unsuitable
selections to the offending bands and stop pussy footing around?
