I have to agree with Matt here on his point. Yes, a test piece should be
a piece designed to test all elements of style and not just, technical
abilities etc. Why not incorporate all the styles we come across in our
rep. into the test pieces we play?? One of the best examples of a test
piece that comes to mind with many elements of style has to be THE
ESSENCE OF TIME - PETER GRAHAM. Has a bit of everything in it don't you
think?? Quite different if compared to ISAIAH 40 from last years
performance. It had a style of it's own but was more contemporary etc.
Maybe that's what makes a good test piece too. The composers who are
comissioned to write the music for the NATIONAL/EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS,
etc..........are they given any kind of guide lines to what they can write??
