Hmmm... 

Sounds to me like the _mute_ part works real well. What about 
the amplifier part?

Was the amplifier plugged in or fresh batteries used? (Whichever
it uses, I don't know, I don't have one).  Volume turned up?
Mute plugged in to amplifier? Headphones working properly? Headphones
connected?
