I think they were made around the same time - I remember seeing an
article in BBW about 18 months or so about brass bands having a new
lease of life on the big screen, etc. etc. and both films were featured
then.

Incidentally, I thought the main character in the band gave a very
convincing 'performance' of Abide With Me - I only noticed one incorrect
fingering!
