The common practice by BBb basses of taking liberties in doubling the octave was discussed on this MailList several weeks ago. When playing low concert EEb down to concert BBB (on treble clef: F 3 ledger lines below the staff down to Db 4 ledger lines below the staff), the BBb bass player usually uses fingerings in combination with the 4th valve. However, these low notes that still lie higher than actual pedal tones might tend to sound "stuffy," and intonation on non-compensating horns might be in question. I believe that it was Arnold Jacobs who labelled tones produced on a BBb tuba based upon an open (no valve) EEb (F 3 ledger lines below the treble clef in British Band music) as "privileged notes." Are these considered a viable solution to the problem stated above, or are they not "kosher" to the BBb bass purist? Kindest regards, Steve Marcus BBb Bass, Prairie Brass Band (percussionists needed badly!!!!)
