As I understand it (Federal Law, Copyright Act, 1968), a breach of
copyright occurs in Australia if an item is REPRODUCED (e.g. public
performance of a musical piece) without permission from the copyright
owners. It does not matter that you are playing your own arrangement, or
that you are not making any money out of it. The copyright for the piece
still lies with the owners, and you need permission for reproduction. The
law will obviously vary from country to country.
Now if you tweak the melodic and rhythmic motifs a little.....
