What exactly were the benefits of people learning in this way? Nigel et al: There are two flavors of Solfege (Sol-Fa is a variant). One is "Fixed" DO wherein C is always DO, F is FA, G is SI, etc. This is the "classical" system which still obtains at the French Conservatory and is the system by which Arnold Jacobs was trained at the Curtis Institute. The other (which I prefer) is "movable" DO. Where DO is the tonic in major, FA is subdomonant, etc. This is the system promoted by Zoltan Kodaly and used in his system of musical training. It also makes multitudes of sharps and flats easier;-) The idea behind all of this is to "internalize" the notes so that music becomes a total sound in one's head, not merely all of the technical considerations. I believe that true musical geniuses such as the Brothers Childs operate at this level. Their long exposure to the skill of their father gave them an ideal sound and a familiarity with the repertoire that exceeds the experience of the rest of us. In the same vein, when asked when to begin a child's music education, Zoltan Kodaly answered, "Nine months before the birth of the mother."
