To: brass-band@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@inet cc: From: Robert C Knight @ SB_PHARM_RD Date: 02-Oct-97 03:40:26 PM Subject: Acoustics Categories: A couple of years ago we built a rehearsal hall, and over the following years added heating and carpets that we couldn't afford in the first instance. The result is warm and dry - for many years before we rehearsed in a wooden hut - but we didn't get the acoustics right. No-one in the band is expert in this field, so we are looking for anyone who may be able to give us some advice: perhaps someone out there has solved a similar problem. The rehearsal room itself is quite small (about 6 metres by 7) with a pitched roof around 4m high in the middle and 2.5 at the walls. The walls are standard blocks finished with plaster. And the problem: it's too loud! We know that most of the problem is at medium to high frequencies, because we started with loads of old carpets (say 2cm thick) on the concrete floor, and when we replaced them with thinner carpet tiles it got much worse. A couple of cm of carpet isn't likely to have much effect at low frequencies, I think. And heavy curtains on one wall have helped a lot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
