In my experience, day transfers are limited to one or two borrowed players from a band of the same or lower section and this works because we DO have a registration scheme and we know who is being borrowed from where. Brass bands are about a committed group of individuals who want to work together to make music and they like to compare themselves against similar groups of individuals in contests. It would only take one band to buy success by "borrowing" (=paying?) a handfull of top class players for the Area or the Nationals before everyone else tried the same trick. If registration were abandoned altogether I can imagine a group of semi-professionals developing who would hire themselves out to the highest bidder for contesting. Maybe the National Registration scheme isn't perfect, but IMHO it's there for a good reason and we should think long and hard before we abandon it.
