Re: Favourites.

David,

I said 'ex' because I can't commit myself to the band at the moment due to
working away in Glasgow, and have had to give up the sop seat to someone
else. I haven't left the band, and when my stint in Glasgow is up (end of
next January) intend to play with the band again regularly, maybe not on
sop though. At the moment I'm just doing a few concerts on the back row to
keep involved and keep my lip in.

I didn't play at the nationals because I couldn't obviously get to any
rehearsals. The sop player on the day was Steve Scarff, who played
brilliant. Steve used to play sop with Stocksbridge band, and at the
moment plays with Harlequin Brass (10/12 ? piece), as well as B&R whenever
he is needed.

I only played the piece once, and thought it was great. The sop part has
its difficult bits, and there are plenty of high notes. These are mainly
in thickly scored sections, but there are 2 sections towards the end which
are really exposed, where you come in on top A's a few times and play a
tune going up to top C. Not the easiest notes to get on a nervy contest
stage !! Steve didn't put a foot wrong.

Martin Irwin.
